File Downloads

Most of the people who write documents that are available for download on this site use Microsoft Word. If you don't have MS Word, you can download Microsoft Word Viewer from Microsoft for free; it allows you to view, print and copy MS Word documents without having to have MS Word itself.
Documents are also provided as Rich Text Format (.rtf) which any word processor should be able to open, but the documents may look messy as rtf files can not retain all the formatting done in MS Word.
Documents are also provided as Portable Document Format (.pdf) files, which do retain the formatting, but require Adobe Reader, which is free, to be viewed. Adobe Reader is very often found on computer magazine free CDs or it can be downloaded; version 7 is a vast improvement over version 6.

Open Source Software

For home users (and in all honesty, most office workers as well) OpenOffice2 is a free
Open Source office suite that offers the vast majority of users all the functionality they will ever need, and exceedingly usefully it can open MS Office files, let you work on them and then save them again in MS Office format, so that tranferability is no problem. OpenOffice can be downloaded easily if you have broadband, or if you are a parish member, contact us and we can provide a CD. OpenOffice is used to produce the .pdf files downloadable on the site.
All image manipulation for this site was done with another Open Source package called
the GIMP and all the coding was done using Notepad++ a text editor that is a big improvement over Windows Notepad. The home PC used to develop and test this website was set up as a webserver using Open Source software, Apache webserver and PHP scripting.
